Hellooooo everyone. I am making this post mostly to test the blog function on my website but also to talk a bit about what I have been up to as of late. I am mostly just busy in the trenches of finishing my masters thesis – 3 weeks to go !! When it’s done I will post more about it plus the scores, but for right now I can say I’m writing a piece for string quartet + vocal quartet, setting Rilke’s poem ‘O Lacrymosa’. The research aspect will deal with aesthetics, specifically that of poetry and music. Rilke was well known for hating his poems being set to music (sorry) except this poem he wrote specifically for the composer Ernst Krenek to set. In the research, I’m going to look into how meaning changes or is lost when poetry is set to music. Since I am not a native German speaker, and I am not living in 1926, there are likely aspects of the poem that will always be lost to me without that linguistic and cultural context. Combine that with some people argue (I can’t remember which author off the top of my head, sorry) that setting poetry to music is an act of destruction to the original meaning of the poem, I’ve decided to go in the direction of if-I’m-going-to-butcher-the-poem-anyway-I-may-as-well-hack-it-up-into-little-tiny-bits-and-glue-it-back-together-to-intentionally-create-new-meaning. So look forward to that!

I’m also SUPER excited to be attending the Bolton film festival at the end of September. Il Cervo Verde has been selected to be shown at the festival which is very very exciting. I have never been to a film festival before and am looking forward to it. If you haven’t already, do check out the animator Jude’s website here.
